7 Reasons Why You Should Try Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga uses various props that allow people to stay in a posture for a long time without any discomfort, stress, tension, risk of injury and pain. The purpose of restorative yoga is to allow the release of any tension, stress, strain existing in the body, using props and a longer holding of poses. While other types of yoga, such as Ashtanga, are more focused around the sequences of heat building sequences, restorative aims to fills the mind and body with slow and simple body postures. The holding of the poses usually lasts longer than the normal posture in a vinyasa based class class, lasting about 5 minutes.

1. Increase Awareness

Restorative yoga is meant for this; restoration through reconciliation of the mental and psychical through the practice of silence. This type of yoga is different, but appealing, because the goal is to better understand the conscious state and less psychical. The energy that is usually expended in the “flow” class is used in the restorative class to concentrate the mind to leave any tension or stress anywhere in the body. The goal of the restorative class is to offer a more therapeutic type of relaxation, which is usually overshadowed in a more dynamic style of yoga. Breathing should be deeper, calm the nervous system and cultivate more self-awareness.

2. Restorative Yoga can be Practiced by Everyone

Many times (like most things in life), we think that we need to overcome the mentality of “no pain, no gain”. Restorative yoga brings more connectedness and mindfulness to the present, and they can be practiced by everyone, especially for those who recover from injury or in conditions of increased stress. It also pays special attention to any area of the body where you can act strenuously and not be aware of, for example, the jaw, wrists and abdomen. Props used in the restorative class may include: blocks, bolsters, straps, blankets and pillows. Blocks can be used under the feet to release any stress that can occur at a bound angle, by using a strap around the torso and toes. The block can also be placed under the lower back to the footsteps of the wall pose to allow freeing into the sacristy.

All forms of yoga help make you more aware, but the regular use of restorative postures leads you faster to this nirvana.

However, restorative yoga is not a stretching class and does not have an end point, as if you could touch your toes after 10 sessions. You are exploring what happens when you release the tension that your body normally holds.

A restorative posture gives you the opportunity to see where you are holding such stress. Once you achieve this realization, you can make small changes in your daily life to reduce the stress and tension that you can accumulate in your body.

Restorative yoga helps overweight women to trim fat. Restorative yoga with a more active stretch regimen for 48 weeks and found that women practicing yoga lose more subcutaneous fat.

Yogis also lost more weight than stretchers. One explanation may be that restorative yoga reduces the level of cortisol, of which high levels are associated with an increase in abdominal fat.

6. Soothing to the Nervous System

The slower pace and deep breathing that you get in the restorative yoga class, trigger the parasympathetic nervous system from the very first position. This activation helps to mitigate the effects of a regular stressful response or stress-fighting that can harm your physiology and well-being. A general calming effect on the nervous system determines a deep relaxing tone for the class that calms your mind and body at the cellular level.

7. Encourages Mindfulness

Restorative yoga can also easily be called “mindful yoga”, thanks to the extended self-awareness and body that comes through the practice. Slower movements improve the space for a deeper perception of posture and breathing. Awareness of the physical sensations, thoughts or emotions that arise or sound in the environment can become much more important in the depth of restorative practice. Simply put, you can see and feel more of the world, through your experience of yoga.

Restorative yoga invites you to become your own guide and be gentle with yourself through slow, mindful movement and breathing. In the rapidly changing environment in which we live today, a relaxing practice is necessary to find a balance of mind, body and spirit.
